helping students build confidence & work towards that all-important 4-4 pass:

Is your child going into Year 11 currently working around Grades 1–3 in GCSE Science?

Perhaps they find Science overwhelming, struggle to understand what exam questions are actually asking, or simply don't know where to begin.

My AQA Combined Science Foundation groups are specifically designed for students who need Science slowed down, broken into manageable steps and explained clearly - without ever being made to feel like they should already know the answer.

SOME STUDENTS NEED MORE SUPPORT - NOT MORE RESOURCES

They know more than their grade suggests

They know more than their grade suggests

They know more than their grade suggests

Foundation students can often know far more Science than their exam results suggest.

The difficulty can be turning that knowledge into marks.

They may think that they hate Science but really they just need a bit of help and guidance to get started.

I also tutor many students with dyslexia, ADHD and other additional learning needs, for whom a page full of Science questions can feel particularly overwhelming.

Giving these students more content isn't always the answer.

They often need guidance, reassurance, repetition and someone alongside them showing them HOW to tackle things step by step. That's exactly how my Foundation groups work.

  • processing longer or unfamiliar questions
  • identifying the important information
  • understanding command words
  • knowing how much to write
  • structuring answers
  • remembering and applying knowledge
  • calculations and equations
  • confidence and exam anxiety

What happens in a Foundation group session?

We slow things down...

I explain concepts clearly and in manageable chunks, and we work through questions together before expecting students to tackle them independently.

Students are given time to think, ask questions and make mistakes.

We look at:

✓ What is the question actually asking me?

✓ What's the command word?

✓ Which information do I need?

✓ How many marks is it worth?

✓ What does a good answer look like?

✓ Where exactly are those marks coming from?

Students feel comfortable

There's no expectation that they should already know the answer. That's what they're coming to me for.

And throughout the year, we revisit previous learning again and again so that knowledge has a much better chance of sticking.

It's not just about knowing the Science

One of the biggest things I work on with Foundation students is how to get the marks they are capable of getting.

Every week we practise past exam questions and work on:

✓ Command words
✓ Structured answers
✓ Calculations
✓ Graphs and data
✓ Required practical questions
✓ Exam technique
✓ Mock preparation
✓ Regular retrieval and recap

As the year progresses, my aim is for students to start looking at questions and thinking: “I know how to start this.”

That change in confidence can be huge.
